When my now-mentor came to me and shared that essential oils could help my horrible morning sickness during my pregnancy, I inwardly wanted to roll my eyes. Anybody who has ever read one of my Christmas wish lists knows that I am practical to the point that if someone actually spends money on an impractical gift for me, it hurts my heart. This year, before I decided I couldn’t be bothered to measure all our windows, I legitimately had curtains on my Christmas list. Curtains.
I did consider essential oils for the briefest second, and then I thought, Nah. We have groceries to buy. We have a baby on the way. I ain’t spending money on a bottle of oil; are you kidding me?
I wasn’t about to spend money on what I thought was a weird hippie fad, so I didn’t. My mentor came back to me a few times to talk about oils and her success stories were so compelling, finally I caved and purchased one oil–peppermint. From it I learned two very important lessons: 1. Different oils work differently for different people and 2. Essential oils create a lifestyle of wellness; they are not a single product that will fix all your problems overnight. I was told to inhale the peppermint oil when I felt sick and it could help with my nausea, so when my sickness rolled around approximately 2 minutes later, I took a long sniff of peppermint. Then I ran to the bathroom and threw up for five minutes.
After that, I stopped inhaling my peppermint oil. It sat in a cupboard and I pulled it out every once in awhile to make peppermint hot chocolate or a holiday dessert. When I was asked again about purchasing a set of oils, I told her I would do it later. For months, I kept telling my mentor later, later, later–I didn’t want to spend money on a product I didn’t even think worked.
Six months after being introduced to essential oils, something my mentor said finally got through to me. You want to learn to use these oils before your sweet baby is born, she told me. Essential oils take learning and practice to see what works for you personally and you don’t want to have to experiment when you have this baby and he needs something.
I gave her a call a few days later and purchased my beginner’s kit to get me started.
When the package showed up on my doorstep, I was beyond excited. I started using my oils in earnest and saw that some oils worked on me, some worked on my husband, and some worked on others but not us. Our bodies have different chemical compositions and oils also have different chemical compositions–they don’t all work the same way together. Just because the peppermint didn’t do diddly squat for my morning sickness doesn’t mean that it won’t work for the pregnant lady next door and I have since seen it work for many. Different oils work differently for different people and sometimes suggestions given to me for certain issues have done nothing and other times they’ve fixed the problem immediately. There might be one oil that will fix one problem, but a lifestyle of wellness cannot come from a single product alone.
My “aha” moment came one day when I began developing a terrible cough. Coughing is the worst ever, and I would easily hand over $100 to anyone who could make my cough magically disappear. My cough got worse and worse until finally I decided to try an oil called R.C. Dropping a little coconut oil in my hand, I added two drops of R.C. and rubbed it on my chest and my cough instantly stopped. I did not cough once more after the oil touched my chest and that was it, I was officially a believer. Since then I have also learned to make oils my first resort, not my last.
The oils have allowed me to sleep in the same bed as my husband without wanting to push him off the side due to his snoring, they have stopped sickness in hours, they have calmed down my baby in the middle of the night, they have given me the mental clarity to make a four drive on my own late at night, they stopped me for developing one stretch mark during my pregnancy, and have I mentioned they make everything they touch smell amazing? My husband loves candles and we still buy candles because I also love my husband but candles are filled with chemicals. Essential oils in the diffuser smell far better than candles, and they’re not only not filled with chemicals, they also have numerous health benefits. Everybody wins!
When I first heard about essential oils, I wasn’t willing to pay money for them. I didn’t think a bottle of oil was worth it. Now, I think about the beginner’s kit I purchased and how it has fixed skin problems, helped us all sleep better, stopped coughs immediately, prevented sickness even in extremely dirty places, helped us clean all sorts of stains, gotten rid of blisters–and it has not done all these things once, it has done all these things multiple times and we still have more oils to use. If you asked me how much a box of oils and a diffuser that could do all those things are more over and over again was worth, I would have a hard time putting a price tag on it. $500? $1000? After all, a trip to the doctor’s office often costs a few hundred bucks and it’s prevented us from ever having to go. The beginner’s kit costs nowhere near that much–nowhere at all.
